The terrace, the green garden and the sound of the river made our stay unforgettable. The host was so kind.

A 150-year-oldmud house beneaththe Eagle's Nest
01 — The House
For a century and a half, these walls of kahgel — mountain earth kneaded with straw — have held the warmth of family life in the village of Shams Kolayeh, on the edge of Moallem Kalayeh in the Alamut Valley.
Five stone steps lead up to a timber veranda wrapped in fruit trees. Inside: a kitchen and two bedrooms with four single beds and five sets of traditional Persian bedding. The bathroom with both Western and Persian toilets opens onto the veranda, the way village homes have always been. A low mud wall encloses a 300 m² garden where the only traffic is the river.

How a 150-year-old house is made

Earth from the mountain…
…kneaded with straw and river water…
…walnut and poplar timber for the veranda…
…and 150 years of life around it.
…and today, it's waiting for you.

04 — Four Seasons

The valley turns impossibly green. Almond and cherry blossom spill over the mud walls, snowmelt roars down the river and shepherds walk their flocks back up to the high pastures.

Next door to the house
میموندژMaymun‑Dez
The lost fortress of the Assassins — hiding in the cliffs of Shams Kelayeh.
In November 1256, the last Nizari lord, Rukn al‑Din Khurshah, came down from a fortress called Maymun‑Dez and surrendered to Hulagu Khan's Mongol army. Within weeks Alamut itself had fallen — and for centuries, nobody was sure where Maymun‑Dez had stood.
Above our village rises a sheer red cliff, honeycombed with man‑made caves, rock‑cut chambers and walls of sun‑dried brick built straight into the rock face. Many historians and archaeologists who have studied the Alamut fortresses believe this cliff — Dezh‑e Shams Kelayeh — is the long‑lost Maymun‑Dez.
You can see it from the village and walk to its foot. Go at sunrise, when the mist slides down the cliff, and you'll understand why someone chose to hide here.
05 — The Valley
Tucked into the Alborz mountains, two hours from Qazvin, the Alamut Valley is one of Iran's most dramatic landscapes — terraced orchards, red canyons, cliff‑top fortresses and villages that look unchanged for centuries.
